Brush Fire in Newbury Park Contained in 2 Hours - View of the Smoky Sunset

KTLA news reported that a brush fire near the Conejo Scales was reported around 7 p.m. tonight in a moderate to heavy brush area. Thanks as always to the great efforts of the Ventura County Fire Department, the fire was out by 9 p.m. with no structural damage. Here's a view of the sunset looking toward the Conejo Grade tonight around 8 p.m. from the Ventu Park area, thanks to one of our favorite CVG Facebook followers.

Beautiful Views of Newbury Park, Conejo Valley and the Western Plateau

Last Sunday I decided to hike up the hills that are adjacent to the Seventh Day Adventist Center and Home Depot/Target Plaza in Newbury Park. These hills overlook Newbury Park and provide a panoramic view of the Conejo Valley and portions of the Conejo Canyons Open Space in northwest Thousand Oaks. What an amazing view! Thousand Oaks is surrounded by a 15,000 acre ring of open space. To learn more about our open space, visit the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency website at www.conejo-openspace.org.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words...But Sometimes Can Be Deceiving

From looking at this picture of 19 month old Paxton Ferry of Camarillo, you'd never know that he was actually having a blast and giggling away down the slide at Arneill Ranch Park. But, according to his mommy, Margot, that's exactly what he was doing. Yes, a picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes it doesn't tell the whole story. Great pic, Margot!

Need help planning what to pack for school, camp or picnics in the park? Margot's Facebook page, Little Lunches, will give you some great ideas.

Dramatic Picture of Sailboat Washed Ashore Point Dume Last December

Late last year around Christmas time, we posted some pictures of a sailboat that washed ashore at Point Dume in Malibu. The owner of the boat was not hurt and it was reported that the Zeus would be salvaged.

In February we stopped by the boat and pretty much everything previously attached to the boat was pilfered.

Well the other day, photographer Craig Barry took this dramatic shot of the Zeus surrounded by the tide coming in. Yes, the Zeus is still there! Notice the lovely grafitti on the boat. Sheesh, why can't people just leave things alone. In any case, this is a great shot.

Local Conejo Valley Scenes From Landscape Artist Karen Winters

Recently I caught up with landscape artist Karen Winters at ArtWalk in Thousand Oaks, where her most recent work was on display. I particularly enjoyed a colorful Catalina Island piece on display but of course her local Conejo Valley work is always great to see. Moving Out of Your Comfort Zone - "Snow Daze" by Chuck Trunks

The latest work of Camarillo artist Chuck Trunks entitled "Snow Daze" depicts a snow man looking frazzled over the transition from winter to summer. We all feel some degree of discomfort when moving out of our own comfort zones; and sometime all we need is a little push. See Trunks' other work on Conejo Valley Guide by clicking here.

Photos From Today's Amgen Tour of California Final Stage in Thousand Oaks

The final stage of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California flew into Thousand Oaks this afternoon as the entire city geared up for the excitement. While I wasn't there because I was entertaining my kids in Santa Barbara, Marcella Ketelhut of local Los Robles Hills Winery made me feel like I was with some awesome photos. Learn more about the Tour results and this year's overall winner, Chris Horner, at www.amgentourofcalifornia.com.
