Umami Burger at The Lakes at Thousand Oaks Served Its Last Savory Burger Last Night

The Lakes at Thousand Oaks wasted no time removing most traces of Umami Burger day after closing.

As reported via Instagram yesterday afternoon, Umami Burger at The Lakes at Thousand Oaks closed its doors at the close of business last night, Saturday, January 4, 2020. They originally opened here on May 3, 2012 for a nearly eight year run.

I for one was a fan of Umami Burger but the jury seems a bit mixed on this local eatery. Yes, the burgers were a bit on the pricey side for fans of In N Out Burger, The Habit Burger and Five Guys (all of which I also enjoy) but pricing aside, I always enjoyed them. I also tried my very first Impossible Burger here at Umami Burger back in June 2017.

I visited Umami Burger yesterday and enjoyed my last burger at the bar around 2pm. There was one family at a table inside and another group outside. Kind of a lonely farewell. So long, Umami Burger, and best of luck to your entire staff in securing new jobs.

My final Umami burger. Looked better in person.

Cafe Firenze in Moorpark Announced It Will Be Closing Its Doors Today

After the shock of hearing that both Brendan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant locations closed their doors today, it was another surprise to hear this afternoon that Cafe Firernze in Moorpark is also closing its doors…TODAY.

Management indicated its lease had ended after 11 years in operation and they were unable to reach an agreement on new lease terms.

Let’s hope for some better news as we make our way into the new year.

Brendan's Irish Pub and Restaurant Has Closed Its Camarillo and Newbury Park Locations

BrendansClosed2010.jpg

Very sad to report that today, Brendan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant announced that it has closed both its original Camarillo location and its second location in Newbury Park, next to the Palm Garden Hotel.

The Agoura Hills location closed earlier in 2019.

Brendan’s Camarillo originally opened on January 15, 2011. I was there when they were unloading items shipped in directly from Ireland to decorate the place. They’ve had a good nine year run there, but still sad to seem them go.

Brendan’s Newbury Park opened on October 8, 2012.

No word on what’s next for these locations. The Newbury Park location is physically connected to the Palm Garden Hotel and Spa, so it would seem there would be a desire for a new operator there soon. Stay tuned.

Denny's Opened New Location on Telegraph Road in Ventura a Few Months Ago

Dennys Ventura 12.15.19.JPG

A rare moment indeed. A brand spanking new Denny’s recently opened in Ventura at 4095 Telegraph Road (cross street Ashwood) in what was previously a Coco’s that closed in Aprll 2015.

It’s not often that an older restaurant opens a new location like this. Kudos to Denny’s. www.dennys.com

About Denny’s (why not):

Harold Butler and Richard Jezak opened a donut stand in Lakewood, California in 1953 and called it Danny’s Donuts. Butler’s stated promise was “To serve the best cup of coffee, make the best donuts, give the best service, offer the best value and stay open 24 hours a day.”

After Jezak’s departure from the now 6-store chain, Butler created and changed the concept a year later from a donut shop to a coffee shop with store #8. Danny’s Donuts is renamed Danny’s Coffee Shops and changes its operation to 24 hours in 1956.

In 1956, Butler changed the name to Denny’s Coffee Shops to avoid confusion with Coffee Dan’s in Los Angeles. Denny’s Coffee Shops became Denny’s in 1961.

The “Grand Slam” was introduced in Atlanta in 1977 in homage to Hank Aaron.

Today there are over 1,700 locations worldwide.
