Burgers are Booming in the Conejo Valley and Adjacent Areas!

Yelp indicates there are 34 eateries in the Conejo Valley cities of Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills that specialize in BURGERS! If you live in the Conejo Valley and enjoy a great burger, your options are better than ever. Burgers blossomed in 2012 with the addition of the following burger joints. Let's take a look at some of our local options.

Umami Burger opened at The Lakes at Thousand Oaks in May 2012. Umami is a Japanese word describing the pleasant and savory taste of their burgers. Quite unique and delicious. On the pricey side but worth it if you want something different! My wife ranks Umami and The Counter neck and neck as her favorite burgers in town. The deceiving simplicity of the Umami Burger

BurgerWerks Charbroil Grill opened in Westlake Village on February 13, 2013. They indicate their burgers feature locally raised, prime, corn-fed beef.....all natural, no hormones, no antibiotics from Brandt beef.

The popular Smashburger opened in Thousand Oaks in July 2012. Every time I've been there it has been packed with happy burger biters. I particularly enjoy their sweet potato fries. And the black bean veggie burger (pictured below) is surprisingly good!

A third Ventura County Five Guys Burgers and Fries opened at The Collection at Riverpark in Oxnard in November, joining other locations in Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley. Five Guys serves up a meaty burger that is among my boys' favorites.

Beef is not lacking in this Five Guys burger

Veggie burger and sweet potato fries at Village Burger in Thousand OaksGarage Dogs opened on Thousand Oaks Boulevard across the street from 24 Hour Fitness back in April (but subsequently closed in the September 2013 time frame).

The Habit Burger Burger Grill seems to have as many locations as Subway. Quite a popular place, with very consistently good burgers, fries and other menu items. In May, The Habit opened a second location in Simi Valley.

The last remaining Burger King in Thousand Oaks, on Avenida de los Arboles, was torn down in 2012 and replaced with a brand spanking new McDonald's, just a few miles from another McDonald's on Moorpark Road. This is a case of BIBO (Burger In, Burger Out). Another popular burger joint, P & L Burgers, is nearby.

A new Tommy's Burgers opened in Ventura on December 15, 2011, not too far from the bounds of the Conejo Valley. Thou shalt try a Tommy's chili burger at least once in one's lifetime. There's also a Tommy's in Simi Valley.

STACKED: Food Well Built opened its first Ventura County location at The Oaks Mall, across from The Cheesecake Factory, on March 20, 2013. Burgers are a prominent menu item at this eatery, where you can customize your food using a tabletop iPad.

Burger Express in Newbury Park closed its doors on October 30, 2012 after 15 years in business...but...we're happy to report they plan to re-open near Moorpark College in the April 2013 time frame!

Also, burger joint Johnny Rockets at The Oaks Mall closed its doors early in 2012 and its Agoura Hills location in December. You'll have to go to Camarillo (The Promenade at the Camarillo Premium Outlets) or Calabasas (The Commons) now for your Johnny Rockets fix. That said, within a week of the Agoura Hills closing, the Agoura Hills Diner opened in its place with some great looking burgers on tap.

The Counter opened in Westlake Village back in 2009 and is still one of our favorite burger places. This is the place I take my out of town friends to, while my wife brags The Counter was noted by Oprah as her favorite burger too.

The Counter has what may be most favorite veggie burger in town.

Other great burgers around town are served up at (of course) In-N-Out Burger (many argue In-N-Out is the best burger wife ranks it 3rd overall on her list), The Ranch in Westlake Village, Wood Ranch BBQ, Bandits BBQ, Billy Dz Backyard BBQ and Ranch Hand BBQ in Newbury Park, Islands Restaurant and Red Robin Burgers, to name just a few! I've had an amazing Kobe beef burger at The Grill on the Alley in Westlake Village.

I've driven by Hook Burger in Oxnard many times since it opened in October 2010 but have never stopped and tried it. They indicate on their website that burgers are 100% fresh prime chuck, fresh chicken is hormone and antibiotic free, ahi tuna is guaranteed fresh and breads are baked daily at Ethnic Breads in Santa Barbara. The burger images on their site are pretty mouthwatering. Time to stop by.

East coast based Jake's Wayback Burgers is opening in Ventura in April 2013.

This list is nowhere near complete, so feel free to comment on all of YOUR favorites below!

Famous Dave's has a really good burger. Just make sure they go easy on the salt when they cook it.
The Hat has a good burger

The Burger Barn, a hole in the wall located at 5000 Santa Rosa Rd. in Camarillo is still one of my favorite burger joints.
