“Encaustic & Stone” Art Show in Ventura April 18 to May 19

Two Ventura women are joining forces to exhibit their artistic visions and range in an April 18-May 19 show at the Buenaventura Gallery in downtown Ventura.

“Encaustic & Stone” will feature two- and three-dimensional pieces by Joyce Lombard and Virginia Buckle, both longtime Buenaventura Art Association members with numerous awards to their credit. They will attend a 5-7 p.m. reception on April 28, the second Saturday of the monthlong show.

Lombard’s specialty is encaustic paintings and paper sculpture, which employ beeswax, resin and pigments, built up in layers with other inclusions. Buckle sculpts in stone, and will present several acrylic paintings and collage artworks as well.

“With encaustic there are many ways to use the materials, from painterly to casting encaustic medium of various formulas into molds,” said Lombard, who will give a demonstration and discuss the history of the medium at 2 p.m. May 6. “I am inspired by contemporary encaustic artists and the many ways they work with the medium. Many of my layered and collaged works reference the natural world; much of it I abstract.”

Buckle said she has been involved in creating art since childhood, but took up sculpting only since retiring from teaching high school English literature in 1994. Among her favorite art subjects are mythology, nature and the female form.

“My joy as an artist is the discovery of the beauty of color and design that lies within the rough stone,” she said. “My goal is to reveal that beauty by sculpting that stone in a way that will please the eye and soul of the beholder.”

In her sculpture and painting, she said, her favorite part is “seeing my idea come into being under my guidance with stone, paint, tools and fabric.”

Buckle plans to exhibit 11 sculptures and six paintings and collage pieces; Lombard will have about 25 encaustic and mixed media works on display. Concurrent with their show will be a juried exhibition of artworks by BAA members.
