Family Geocaching Fun in Ventura County

Military ammunition box geocache container (photo from Wikipedia)When a couple friends first told me about how fun geocaching was a few years ago, I blew it off, figuring it was yet one more activity that I don't have time for in my busy family life. I wasn't quite sure what geocaching was, but it sounded like a silly game to me.

Boy was I wrong! Geocaching is a lot of fun!

In a nutshell, geocaching is an outdoor activity where you hunt for hidden containers, or "caches," using GPS tracking on your smartphone or a GPS device. Kind of like modern day treasure hunting!

There are over 2 million active geocaches around the world waiting to be found. What is a cache? Generally a waterproof storage container in various sizes that contains a log and perhaps other little treasures waiting to be found.

I use an Android phone and, after registering at Geocaching.com, downloaded a free app called c:geo. I was impressed at how easy this app is to use. Simply press "nearby" to find local caches registered on Geocaching.com and pick one that is nearby and sounds interesting. The app tells you how many meters/km the cache is from your location. Read the cache description, click the little compass that shows you which direction to go and how far away you are from the cache. And, you're off!

(There are plenty of other geocaching apps for both iPhones and Android phones, many free. Since I've only tried c:geo, I don't claim to be an expert on these apps. So other apps may work better for you.)

The kids and I have a blast with geocaching. We can be anywere...a park, the beach, on the trails...and track down caches nearby. The GPS brings you to within a reasonably precise location, sometimes "dead on" and other times within 5 to 10 meters, but once you get there, you may have to look around in every nook and cranny. It is easy to give up, but it can take a bit of persistence to find the geocache. Some of the geocaches we've uncovered have been a lipstick case hidden under a rock, a plastic screw-top case hidden in a light pole and a small container hidden in a crevice of a fence.

Who hides these caches? All sorts of people hide geocaches, adding to the fun. We were at Point Dume State Beach when I said, hey, let's look for a geocache! Within 15 minutes we discovered a cache close to the sign shown below. Every hunt I do with my kids, we seem to reach a point where we want to give up...but after some perseverance and luck, more often than not we find the coveted treasure.

We were at the Thousand Oaks Library when afterwards decided to look for some geocaches at the adjacent Conejo Creek Park. Within 30 minutes we uncovered two small geocaches, signed the little log sheet (be sure to bring your own pen as many caches are too small to provide one) and went on our way. Geocaching is fun, engaging and great exercise!

There are literally thousands and thousands of geocaches just within Ventura County. Looking for a little push? Check out local community programs for geocaching classes...our entry into geocaching started with other kids and parents in a fun two hour Conejo Recreation and Park District session.

In addition to your smartphone, your kids can join in on the action with their own handheld GPS devices, like this Geomate Jr. Geocaching GPS.

Go try it out and let us know what you think!

Emergency Response Systems in Ventura County and Surrounding Areas

VC Alert is a free service provided by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services and participating cities.  It launched in January 2012 and replaced the Reverse 911® system deployed in 2008.

Participating cities include Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, and the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. Simi Valley maintains its own emergency response system.

VC Alert alerts residents about emergencies and other important community news.  The system enables officials to provide essential information quickly when there is a threat to the health or safety of Ventura County residents. To learn more and to register online, visit www.vcalert.org or call 805.648.9283. If you were previously enrolled in Reverse 911 or one of the participating cities' systems, you can log in and update your information in the VC Alert system.

Simi Valley currently uses an automated telephone notification system that dials all listed and non-listed land line numbers in specific parts of the city.  A cell phone alert system is not currently available in Simi Valley. The city also operates 530 KHz AM to broadcast any emergency information, evacuations, etc.

The City of Westlake Village has Connect-CTY for telephone emergency response recordings for hazards, warning, evacuations, updates, etc. Land lines are included in their database but you may place an additional phone in their database call (818) 706-1613.

Ventura County emergency alert radio stations: KVEN 1450 AM, KHAY 100.7 FM, KMLA 103.7 FM (SPANISH)

The City of Agoura Hills also uses the Connect-CTY system. Residents can sign up and register cell phones in addition to land lines.  Click here to register. The city's call-in emergency number (818) 597-7301 is also still available.

The City of Malibu also uses the Connect-CTY system for emergency notifications by phone, email or text message.  In addition, the city's emergency hotline is 310-456-9982. The city's radio station is AM 1620.

Other Emergency Numbers

Ventura County Sheriff's Department (805) 654-2380

Ventura County Fire Department  (805) 389-9710

Ventura County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Office (805) 981-5331

Not So Ancient Chinese Secret: Always Order "To Go" at Panda Express

We are not lacking for Panda Express eateries in Ventura County, with 17 locations throughout the area and neighboring areas ranging from Simi Valley, Agoura Hills, the Conejo Valley, Ventura, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula and Oxnard.

When asked "is this for here or to go," traditionally I have always said "for here" when indeed planning to eat at Panda (which is usually the case) and "to go" when the plan is to take the food with me.

But on a recent visit to Panda Express with a buddy, he insisted that I order "to go" although we fully intended to eat there. "Why?" I asked. Because you get a LOT more food, he said. But is that right to order to go when you know full well you'll be eating at the restaurant?  Aw, what the heck. So I gave in and ordered "to go." And yes, I do agree, you do appear to get more food in the "to go" container than you receive on the plate.

Ventura County Schools in U.S. News 2013 Ranking of Nation's Top High Schools

Yesterday, U.S. News & World Report published its 4th ranking of the nation's best public high schools. The study covered nearly 22,000 public high schools across the country.

Schools was again were ranked based on: (1) how well students tested in state-level reading and math proficiency, factoring in disadvantaged students, who tend to score lower on tests; and (2) college readiness, based on how well schools prepare students for college-level work via Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs.

The median college readiness, measured on a scale of 0 to 100, was 14.8 (it was 16.3 in 2012). A readiness index of 100 means that all 12th graders took and passed at least 1 AP or IB test. (More on the methodology)

There were 2,039 California high schools and nearly 2 million students enrolled during the 2010-2011 survey period. To be ranked in California, schools must receive either a gold (top 500 nationally) or silver (top 501 to 2,290 nationally) medal. 501 Callifornia schools received gold or silver medals.

Rankings of local high schools in the Conejo Valley, Ventura County and adjacent areas and summarized in the table below. There were 15 local schools that received gold or silver medal status and thus were ranked nationally and in California.

We compared the 2013 rankings and ratings with those published last year. I will say once again that I find the ranking methodolgy to be perplexing. For example, Royal High has college readiness and academic performance scores of 21.3 and 775 and was not nationally ranked, yet Fillmore High and Buena High received lower scores, yet w

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office Provides Useful Crime Maps Online

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office services the County of Ventura and the five contract cities of Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, and Thousand Oaks, as well as unincorporated areas of Ventura County. There is a wealth of information on the VC Sheriff's website at www.vcsd.org, including the phone numbers for patrol stations.

One tool on the VC Sheriff website that I find to be quite useful is the Crime Maps. Crime maps provide approximate locations of arrests, calls for service and crimes/incidents by jurisdiction, in five-day increments going back up to 35 days.

Example Crime Map from www.vcsd.org website

As you can see from the example above, each incident is highlighted with a marker that shows, when you click it, the date and a brief description of the incident. Using the "zoom in" feature allows you to see actual street names on the map...however, as the VCSD disclaims, these represent approximate locations; actual street addresses are not included in the descriptions.

That said, I was curious one night when I passed a patrol car and sheriff's investigation van parked at a house nearby. The Crime Map showed a marking at what looked to be the exact location that I saw and indicated there was a residential burglary. Then I looked at other weeks in the 'hood and found another burglary and reported suspicious vehicle. While of course it is disturbing to hear of crime close to home, it is great information to know and share with your neighbors to be aware of what's going on.

While the crime maps can be a bit clunky to use, if you're patient, you'll find what you need. For example, if you reset the map to look at a different geographic area, time frame or incident type, once again you will need to use the arrow keys to move around, then zoom in/out to where you need to go. It would be awesome to have a feature where you can simply type in an address, but that feature is not available.

Viewing these maps will really give you a feel for how busy our local police are. For example, in the five days ended 4/11/13, there were 597 calls for service, 111 arrests and 60 reported crimes/incidents in the Thousand Oaks area alone. Calls for service include descriptions like responding to alarms, burglaries, juvenile problems, following up on a resident's well being, suspicious vehicles, shoplifting, prowlers, fights, disturbances and more.

To explore crime maps in your area (Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, and Thousand Oaks, as well as unincorporated areas of Ventura County), visit www.vcsd.org/pr-crime-map.php.

British Retailer Tesco Indicates it Will Be Selling Its Fresh & Easy Stores

On January 31, 2013, Fresh & Easy parent company Tesco said it was looking at "strategic options" for its money-losing U.S. based Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores.

We all pretty much knew where that was going...when you have a business segment that is losing $250 million a year, there was little doubt that Tesco would be leaving the U.S. market.

But that does not mean...yet, at least...that Tesco is shutting down Fresh & Easy. In a posting on the Fresh & Easy website today, the store indicated "As many of you have heard or read today, our parent company Tesco updated on the future of Fresh & Easy.  While we don’t yet know who our new owner will ultimately be, Tesco has already received interest from a number of parties including groups looking to purchase Fresh & Easy as an operating business.  We appreciate all the support and love we’ve received from our loyal customers and even though our parent company plans to leave the US, we’re pleased to confirm there are no plans to close any portion of Fresh & Easy."

So what Tesco and Fresh & Easy indicated today is that 1) Tesco is indeed exiting the U.S. market; 2) there are a number of potentially interest parties who may acquire the Fresh & Easy chain; and 3) there are no current plans to "close any portion of Fresh & Easy."

As part of today's announcement, Tesco said it is treating Fresh & Easy as a "discontinued operation" and as such, has written down the value of Fresh & Easy assets and future anticipated liabilities on its books...to the tune of £1.2 billion...which is approximately $1.8 billion in U.S. dollars. OUCH. The $1.8 billion loss includes roughly $257 million in operating losses, with the remainder the write-down in assets and estimate future lease costs.

That's gotta hurt a bit. Tesco is a British company but its stock also trades on Nasdaq under symbol TESO, which was down 3.3% today, over double what the S&P 500 was down today.

In any case, best of luck to the Fresh & Easy chain in finding a buyer and figuring out a way to generate a profit. There are 10 Fresh & Easy stores in Ventura County and directly adjacent areas.

Lastly, I heard what I found to be quite an odd Fresh & Easy commercial on the radio this morning that is posted below. Very unusual, kind of surprising use of the shortened "f&easy" - a bit risque if ya ask me :)

The Ventura County Genealogical Society Can Help You Track Your Roots

Founded in 1978, the Ventura County Genealogical Society is a non-profit educational organization in Ventura that is dedicated to the promotion of genealogy, public education and fellowship to everyone interested in family histories.

The goals of the Society are to encourage family history and genealogical research; to educate and instruct members through lectures, workshops, and an annual seminar; to educate the members in effective genealogical research skills, and to publish information of interest to genealogists.

Some of the various topics that I've seen the Society cover include using online genealogical resources, family history training, family legacy writing workshops and much more.

With over 200 members, the Ventura County Genealogical Society hosts speakers at monthly meetings generally on the third Saturday of each month (except December) in Ventura.  The Society also maintains a reference library located at the Camarillo Public Library.

First 5 Ventura County Invests in the Future of Young Children

Because the first 5 years impact a lifetime, First 5 Ventura County is making sound investments in the future of children. Early brain research tells us that ages 0-5 are critical years for developing lifelong social, emotional and learning skills. By working with parents, school districts, community leaders, social service and healthcare agencies, First 5 Ventura County helps to design and fund a network of essential services for young children and their families.

Proposition 10, the California Children and Families Act, was approved by voters in 1998, giving rise to First 5. Through a 50 cent tax on tobacco, First 5 develops locally designed systems of support for children 0-5 and their families in 58 counties across the state.

By building an integrated network of early childhood development services, and 11 model Neighborhoods for Learning (NfL), First 5 Ventura County enhances the emotional, physical and intellectual foundation for every child during the years when a majority of all learning and behavior development takes place. First 5 works to help children enter school healthy, supported, prepared to learn and ready to greet their full potential.

Local NfL locations in Ventura County are in Thousand Oaks, Moorpark/Simi Valley, Oak Park, Oxnard (3), Ojai, Camarillo, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula and Ventura.

Programs provided by local area NfLs include family education and training, preschool programs, infants and pre-K programs, health services, enrichment programs, community events and more.

California Homeless Resources Website is Useful Tool for Those in Need in Our State

California Homeless Resources highlights thousands of resources for those in need in an easy-to-use format throughout California. The site, created by Matthew S. Kennedy, who is homeless himself, lists names, addresses, phone numbers and website links for vital resources available to the homeless, including government agencies, job search resources, food and shelter, medical help, libraries, thrift stores and much more, all in one place.

Kennedy became homeless in 2008 after the recession hit and he lost his job managing properties. Unable to find work and having run out of unemployment support, he opted to live out of a 1990 Ford Van with his cat, Charby, in the Santa Barbara area. He is also a talented ceramic artist.

Spending over 1,000 hours using free internet service at local libraries and McDonald's, Kennedy put together California Homeless Resources to help others in his predicament. I've taken a look at the site and it contains a wealth of information. Simply visit www.homelessresourcesca.org and click a city for detailed information.

Read more about Matthew Kennedy and see what he does with ceramics at www.homelessresourcesca.org/Mt_Story.html.
