Not So Ancient Chinese Secret: Always Order "To Go" at Panda Express

We are not lacking for Panda Express eateries in Ventura County, with 17 locations throughout the area and neighboring areas ranging from Simi Valley, Agoura Hills, the Conejo Valley, Ventura, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula and Oxnard.

When asked "is this for here or to go," traditionally I have always said "for here" when indeed planning to eat at Panda (which is usually the case) and "to go" when the plan is to take the food with me.

But on a recent visit to Panda Express with a buddy, he insisted that I order "to go" although we fully intended to eat there. "Why?" I asked. Because you get a LOT more food, he said. But is that right to order to go when you know full well you'll be eating at the restaurant?  Aw, what the heck. So I gave in and ordered "to go." And yes, I do agree, you do appear to get more food in the "to go" container than you receive on the plate.

The Ventura County Food Protection Program Publishes Online Inspection Reports of Over 4,000 Retail Food Facilities

The Ventura County Environmental Health Division Food Protection Program (FPP) performs periodic inspections of over 4,000 retail food facilities* in Ventura County that serve or sell food to the public. Inspectors look for things like:

  • Proper training of food handlers

* Retail food facilities include restaurants, markets that serve food, bakeries, mobile food, donut shops, retail stores like Target that serve food, coffee shops, gas stations, produce stands, bars, etc.

The FPP maintains an online, searchable database of food facility inspection reports since January 2004! CLICK HERE to explore. You can find out about all sorts of violations the facility has had in the past, be it vermin infestation, improper equipment sanitation, no soap or paper towels in the restroom, inoperable equipment, improper storage, you name it! Kind of fun to see. All the restaurants I frequent are on th

Fruit, Vegetable and Other Food, Beer and Wine Festivals In and Around Ventura County

Chuck Trunks' "Strawberry Festival"According to the California Department of Food & Agriculture, California has over 80,000 farms and ranches and in 2010 accounted for over 16% of the nation's national receipts for crops. The state produces nearly half of U.S.-grown fruits, nuts and vegetables! Top commodities in the state include produce and nuts such as grapes, almonds, berries, lettuce, pistachios, tomatoes, walnuts, oranges, broccolis, carrots, avocados and celery.

Ventura County ranks 26th out of 58 California counties in geographic size but in 2010 ranked 7th overall in terms of agricultural output, producing over $1.5 billion worth of strawberries, celery, lemons, rasberries, avocados and other commodities.

All that produce grown in Ventura County (as well as Santa Barbara County) and the hard work that goes into it must explain why we have so many nearby food related festivals and celebrations year-round! Specific dates each year are posted in the Local Events and Events Calendar sections but here'a compilation for you go, ahem, digest. And we also opted to include beer, wine and other long-standing festivals for your imbibing pleasure.

The Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks Chili Cook-Off is in the late April time frame each year. It is a charitable fundraiser that has taken place since 1977.

The California Strawberry Festival takes place in Oxnard on the 3rd weekend of May each year. This wildly popular event has been taking place since 1984.

The Conejo Wine & Jazz Fest premiered on May 20, 2012 and The Rotary Club of Westlake Village Sunrise anticipates continuing the tradition.

The Ojai Wine Festival takes place in the June tim

Would You Like Slides with That? Fast Food Places in Ventura County with Play Areas!

Sometimes it's fun to take the kids out where you know they'll be able to burn off some steam after their chicken nuggets and fries. Mind you, my kids much prefer going to a park to play, but sometimes it is nice to eat and play at these (mostly) indoor play areas.

Here are places to eat (notably nearly all fast food) that have play areas.  You may want to call first to confirm as I don't want to be blamed if I made a mistake :> Know of other places?  Well then, give me the scoop (the news, not the fries).

Thanksgiving is almost the perfect holiday. Unlike many celebrations, the emphasis is less about the material aspects, and more about the day itself.

Simply put, Thanksgiving is about reconnecting with loved ones, eating great food, and watching a few football games. The one blemish, however, is the pressure we feel to flawlessly execute a great Thanksgiving dinner.

Your Bird

It’s no secret that your turkey will be the centerpiece of your Thanksgiving table. It’s also no secret that the quality of the turkey is the primary measurement by which

Over 3.2 Million Californians Seek Food Assistance in the CalFresh Program

Guest post by formerly homeless Conejo Valley resident, Lon V.

According to the California Department of Social Services (CDSS), at the end of 2010, more than 3,200,000 Californians participated in the federally funded California CalFresh program.  The Calfresh program, formerly known as Food Stamps and federally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), can add healthy and nutritious food to your table.

The food stamp benefits are given to you in the form on an ATM type debit card that the state CalFresh program funds, typically once per month.  You then utilize the card and associated PIN number to pay for your groceries at your favorite grocery stores.  You may only purchase unprepared food products; no paper products, pet products, certainly no alcohol or tobacco products.  You also cannot purchase deli products that are already prepared or products that you may open and eat immediately.

If you think about it, that does somewhat limit your possible food choices, especially if you’re homeless and you don’t have the means to cook anything.  Moreover, the homeless population cannot store many foods; therefore, you will often only buy what you plan to prepare and eat immediately.  Fresh foods will not last outdoors without spoiling, and you certainly cannot store any refrigerated products, so those are rarely purchased unless you intend to consume them right away.

The food stamp program, which dates back to the early 1960′s, does have a number of inherent shortcomings.  The first is the restriction on buying healthy, ready-to-ea

Celebrate Father's Day With This Easy Whiskey BBQ Flank Steak Recipe

Whiskey BBQ Flank Steak with Grilled Tomato Relish

Here is an easy BBQ recipe for Father’s Day! Light up those grills and serve up a delicious meal for Dad. Just add some grilled baked potatoes or corn from your local Farmer’s Market and a beautiful green salad or fresh fruit and you have a delightful meal to celebrate the Dad in your life.

For the steak:

1 flank steak (~ 2 lbs)

½ cup salad oil

½ cup tomato juice

½ cup soy sauce

½ cup brown sugar

3 garlic cloves, crushed

½ tsp pepper

1 GENEROUS dash of Jack Daniels

Using a sharp knife, score the steak on each side in a diamond pattern and place in a shallow glass pan.

Combine the marinade ingredients. Pour over steak. Cover and refrigerate overnight, turning once. Let stand at room temperature for an hour before grilling.

Light the grill. Brush the rack lightly with oil. Remove meat from marinade and grill about 4 inches from heat until rare, about 3 minutes per side. DO NOT OVERCOOK! Carve the steak crosswise on a slight angle into ¼” slices.

Grilled Tomato Relish

4 tomatoes, halved

4 Tbsp olive oil

1 sweet onion, diced

1 clove garlic, minced

¼ cup fresh basil, chopped

Salt & pepper

Place tomatoes on a medium heated grill, cut side up, and brush lightly with olive oil – 1 to 2 Tbsp. After about 3 minutes (when bottoms are brown), turn them over and continue to cook about 3-5 minutes (until soft). Remove tomatoes from grill and allow to cool until able to handle.

Combine 2 Tbsp olive oil, onions and garlic in a sauté pan. Cook until onions are soft. Stir in basil. Add the tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Should resemble a chunky salsa. Serve with steak.

How to Beat the May Gray? Cook a Warm Salad of Lentils and Walnuts!

How to beat the May Gray (or June Gloom for that matter)? Cook up a warm salad of lentils, bacon and toasted walnuts with ingredients from your local Trader Joe’s. The fog is lifting already…

Warm Salad of Lentils and Walnuts

2 cups T.J.s prepared lentils

¼ cup sherry vinegar

1 Tbsp Dijon mustard

¼ cup olive oil

3 Tbsp walnut oil

Salt and pepper

1 cup chopped walnuts

¼ lb bacon, cut into ½” dice

½ cup slice green onions

2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Preheat oven to 350F. In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, mustard, olive oil, 2 Tbsp walnut oil and salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

In another bowl, toss the walnuts and the remaining 1 Tbsp walnut oil and season with salt and pepper. Spread nuts on a baking sheet and bake until lightly golden and hot, 5-8 minutes. Set aside.

In a large frying pan over medium heat, fry the bacon until light golden, about 8 minutes. Turn off the heat and, while the pan is still warm, add the lentils, dressing, walnuts and green onions to the bacon and drippings. Toss to mix. Season with salt and pepper and garnish with parsley. Serves 6.

Our California Legislators are Hard at Work, Counting Your Calories!

From the good intentions, questionable impact department.  Our Governor signed into law Senate Bill 1420 yesterday, which will require restaurant chains with 20 or more locations to publish the calorie content of their food beginning on 1/1/11.

The goal was to ensure that we, the ravenous masses, know how many calories we are inhaling so that perhaps we make wiser food choices.  I suppose it may make some of us think twice.  For example, when I see that a Big Mac has 120 calories more than a Quarter Pounder clear as day on that menu, maybe I'll grab the Quarter Pounder.  Yeah, that's it!  I'll go on a Quarter Pounder diet!

The law doesn't apply to chains of 19 or less locations, farmers' markets, grocery stores, commissaries and school cafeterias.  So Mastro's Steakhouse will be at a major advantage as they will not have to tell me I'm eating 3 billion calories in my meal!

The law says that after 1/1/11, "every food facility that uses an indoor menu board shall disclose calorie content information for a standard menu item next to the item on the menu board in a size and typeface that is clear and conspicuous."  All right you brilliant lawmakers, take a look at this Taco Bell menu and tell me how you're gonna fit "clear and conspicuous" calorie information on there!  I already have a hard enough time reading these cluttered menus!

Perhaps the real goal here is to make menus so incomprehensible that people get fed up and start eating at home!  I heard LensCrafters was a big supporter of this law.

But let's zero in their definition of "standard menu item."  SB 1420 defines this as a food or beverage that is on the menu at least 180 days per calendar year and excludes special orders, alcohol, salad bars and buffets.  Souplantation, you're off the hook!

Loophole Alert!  Hey all they have to do is change the menu every 179 days and the law doesn't apply!  I can see it now.  Carl's Jr., Wendy's and Burger King strike an agreement to swap menus every 179 days just to get around this law.

The law goes on to say that if a menu item is a combination of 2 or more other menu items, then you must show the minimum/maximum calorie counts based on all possible combinations.  El Pollo Loco was shaking in its boots at this one.  Imagine...the kids meal combo has 11 different sides and 3 entrees.  That's 33 different combinations, ignoring beverages!  Uggghhh!

They are letting drive-thru menus off the hook, kind of.  Instead of publishing calories on the drive-thru menu, they can provide a brochure with the calorie counts.  "Hi, I'd like a Double Double and Strawberry Shake please.  But hold on, I would like to review your calorie content brochure prior to placing my order.  Thank you."

Violation of this law will be an infraction, punishable by a fine of $50 to $500.  Watch out for those Calorie Cops!!
