Five Very Interesting Museums in Oxnard and Camarillo
Monday, March 19, 2012 at 11:07PM There are over 40 museums listed on Conejo Valley Guide and each and every one of them has interesting features. Here are some highlights from a handful of these museums located in the Oxnard / Camarillo area.
The Mullin Auto Museum recently opened in Spring 2010. Located near Downtown Oxnard in an industrial park, Mullin is a nearly 47,000 square foot unbelievably pristine facility with over 50 French art deco cars frm the 1930s and 1940s. Mullin is open to the public only once or twice a month and you have to check it out. It has the most beautiful cars I've ever seen!
The Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology, aka the Camarillo Bird Museum, is a 22,000 square foot facility in a Camarillo industrial park that contains one of the largest collections of birds, bird eggs and bird nest in the entire world. It is open to the public only 9 times a year. You will truly be amazed at what you see.
There is a vintage 1950 Woolworth building in Downtown Oxnard that has been redeveloped by its now houses a restaurant and office space. But the 1st floor lobby of this 16,800 sq ft building contains a small museum chock full of Woolworth nostalgia. This Woolworth Museum isn't large and fancy but will certainly bring back memories for you geezers out there.
For World War II Air Force history, memorabilia and functioning aircraft, visit the Commemorative Air Force Aviation Museum located at the Camarillo Airport. You will be treated to detailed information and history on the aircraft led by knowledgable docents and you may have an opportunity to step outside to see the aircraft directly adjacent to the runway. Bring your kids!!
Located at Channel Island Harbor, the Ventura County Maritime Museum is home to an extremely large collection of maritime art, models and historical items. If you or your kids enjoy model ships, you will not find a better place to go than here. Truly amazing what you will see here, and be sure to get a docent led tour as I guarantee you will learn something new on this tour. Truly fascinating.
