2nd Annual Ventura Marathon and Half Marathon Planned for Sunday, September 7th

The 2nd Annual Ventura Marathon, Half Marathon and Beach Party is planned for Sunday, September 7th. On Saturday, the 6th, bike rides, kids' run and beach party are planned. This is a flat and fast course...I should know, I ran the inaugural race last year. A fun and well-coordinated local marathon. For more information and to register, visit

After a very successful inaugural year with roughly 2,500 participants and over $16,000 generated for local charities and school clubs, the Ventura Marathon is taking it a step further. In 2014, the Ventura Marathon is kicking off its second year by partnering with five non-profit organizations, including Pier Into The Future, the Humane Society of Ventura County, Autism Society Ventura County, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer and the Rotary Club of Ventura.

“We are excited to be partnering with five amazing charities,” says race director Josh Spiker. “We feel that giving participants the ability to raise funds will give their efforts more meaning, while raising money for the charities.”

Participants signing up online will have the option of raising funds for one of the five charities mentioned. There is a team option too, through a club, an office or any group.

Although the event organizers feel most people will raise money out of the goodness of their hearts, they have added some incentives, which include a Ventura Marathon running hat ($100 goal), a Ventura Marathon hooded sweatshirt ($250 goal) and a free entry to next year’s race ($500). Top individual and top team fundraisers will get additional prizes.

The event is managed by Vendurance Sports, a Ventura County-based running club and event management company aiming to bring high-quality, well-organized and affordable events to the region.

The event will also feature local food and beverages, vendors and displays related to healthy outdoor pursuits, such as surfing, skating, kayaking, and camping, and family-friendly activities and games.

FCCSP is the nonprofit organization that partners with the California State Parks along the coast in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.  It supports the parks by providing for educational programs, fundraising for improvement and beautification projects, leading volunteer service efforts, and advocating for the Parks.  The organization, which has provided educational opportunities for millions of park visitors since its founding, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.  Coincidentally, it is also the 150th anniversary of the California State Parks.

Tickets for the event are on sale now, including VIP tickets that include premium seating, parking, food, and beverages. Discounted rates on general admission tickets for children 7-12 are available.  Children under 7 are free.  Tickets can be bought online at or through the organization’s website at

The organization is currently seeking sponsors for the event, and has put out the call for those who wish to participate as vendors.  Information about the event, including sponsorship information and vendor applications can be found at Additionally, those interested in supporting FCCSP in other ways can contribute items for the silent auction.

John and Roxanne Diesel co-founded Gypsies in a Trunk, an all-volunteer troupe of actors performing free fairy tales for the young and young at heart. The troupe’s love of children’s theatre has led them to perform every May through September since 1995 throughout Ventura County.

The troupe's goal is to create an environment where families can introduce live theatre to their children in a casual setting at the right price – free! All Fairy Tales in the Park performances are held outdoors in a variety of venues and is always free of charge, though the players pass the hat to help cover costuming and travel costs, donations are always voluntary.

Most venues do not have shade, so sunscreen and hats are appropriate. Bring water, juice, snacks, picnics. Blankets and low-slung chairs are recommended. Please leave doggies at home (not that they don't love them). The shows are designed to run approximately 45 minutes, which coincides with the attention span of the target age group, 3-10 year olds.
