Fairy Tales in the Park is a series of free, live theatrical performances geared towards children ages 3 to 10. John and Roxanne Diesel co-founded Gypsies in a Trunk, an all-volunteer troupe of actors performing free fairy tales for the young and young at heart. The troupe’s love of children’s theatre has led them to perform every May through September since 1995 throughout Ventura County.
The troupe's goal is to create an environment where families can introduce live theatre to their children in a casual setting at the right price – free! All Fairy Tales in the Park performances are held outdoors in a variety of venues and is always free of charge, though the players pass the hat to help cover costuming and travel costs, donations are always voluntary.
Most venues do not have shade, so sunscreen and hats are appropriate. Bring water, juice, snacks, picnics. Blankets and low-slung chairs are recommended. Please leave doggies at home (not that they don't love them). The shows are designed to run approximately 45 minutes, which coincides with the attention span of the target age group, 3-10 year olds.

Since its original construction in 1872, the Ventura Pier has stood as a symbol of the region's rich history and natural resources. Once the cornerstone of Ventura County's agricultural, construction and oil trade, today the Ventura Pier is a favorite attraction for fishing, picnics, sunset strolls and beautiful views of Ventura County's coastline and the Channel Islands.
In 1993 a dedicated group of community leaders created Pier into the Future, a non-profit organization, to establish a $1 million endowment fund to preserve and maintain the Ventura Pier for future generations to enjoy. This committed group is continually seeking volunteers to help Pier into the Future reach its goal through community outreach efforts at events such as the Ventura County Fair, the City of Ventura's Street Fairs and the ever-popular food and wine tasting event Pier Under the Stars, a gathering of restaurants, wineries, and breweries all in support of Ventura's treasured Pier. Festivities will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Ventura Promenade overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean and Ventura Pier.

The 2nd Annual Ventura Marathon, Half Marathon and Beach Party is planned for Sunday, September 7th. On Saturday, the 6th, bike rides, kids' run and beach party are planned. This is a flat and fast course...I should know, I ran the inaugural race last year. A fun and well-coordinated local marathon. For more information and to register, visit www.venturamarathon.com
After a very successful inaugural year with roughly 2,500 participants and over $16,000 generated for local charities and school clubs, the Ventura Marathon is taking it a step further. In 2014, the Ventura Marathon is kicking off its second year by partnering with five non-profit organizations, including Pier Into The Future, the Humane Society of Ventura County, Autism Society Ventura County, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer and the Rotary Club of Ventura.
“We are excited to be partnering with five amazing charities,” says race director Josh Spiker. “We feel that giving participants the ability to raise funds will give their efforts more meaning, while raising money for the charities.”
Participants signing up online will have the option of raising funds for one of the five charities mentioned. There is a team option too, through a club, an office or any group.
Although the event organizers feel most people will raise money out of the goodness of their hearts, they have added some incentives, which include a Ventura Marathon running hat ($100 goal), a Ventura Marathon hooded sweatshirt ($250 goal) and a free entry to next year’s race ($500). Top individual and top team fundraisers will get additional prizes.
The event is managed by Vendurance Sports, a Ventura County-based running club and event management company aiming to bring high-quality, well-organized and affordable events to the region.
