Summer Exhibitions and Programs at Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard

Christine Morla - FluorescencesCarnegie Art Museum Summer Exhibitions and Programs

June 9 - August 18, 2013 Exhibitions:

Kaleidoscopic Gaze-Christine Morla
A smart looking series of mixed-media paintings celebrating the City’s diverse cultural landscape. Each painting owes its impact to recycling, being woven from thin strips of packaging from Filipino snack foods. Morla uses cast-off materials collected from neighborhoods and fields to give industrial detritus renewed life. She will also do a special installation using the Museum’s classical interior. Christine Morla is an art instructor at Oxnard College.

Diffusion: Paintings of Blinding Light by Kevin Short
Recent paintings of the disorienting and brilliant effects of sunlight on ocean breaks and beaches. A surfer raised in Goleta, Short is considered an integral observer and portrayer of surf culture with considerable expertise in contemporary impressionism. His respect and continued interest in a healthy, sustainable ocean and shoreline is inherent in his paintings of the California coast. Short’s published series, Trestles, visually points out the beauty and fragility of the San Mateo Creek Estuary.

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 8, 3-5 pm (museum members free / non-members $5)

Gallery Talks
Kevin Short - Thursday, July 11 at 6:30 pm
Christin Morla - Thursday, August 1 at 6:30 pm

Fairy Tales in the Park Free Outdoor Shows in Ventura County, May to September

Fairy Tales in the Park is a series of free, live theatrical performances geared towards children ages 3 to 10. John and Roxanne Diesel co-founded Gypsies in a Trunk, an all-volunteer troupe of actors performing free fairy tales for the young and young at heart. The troupe’s love of children’s theatre has led them to perform every May through September since 1995 throughout Ventura County.

The troupe's goal is to create an environment where families can introduce live theatre to their children in a casual setting at the right price – free! All Fairy Tales in the Park performances are held outdoors in a variety of venues and is always free of charge, though the players pass the hat to help cover costuming and travel costs, donations are always voluntary.

Most venues do not have shade, so sunscreen and hats are appropriate. Bring water, juice, snacks, picnics. Blankets and low-slung chairs are recommended. 20th Annual Oxnard Salsa Festival Planned for July 27-28, 2013

The 20th Annual Oxnard Salsa Festival is set for July 27-28, 2013 at Plaza Park, Fifth and “B” Streets. This annual, free celebration runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday and celebrates everything salsa … the food, the music and the dance!

Presented by the Oxnard Downtowners, the annual event features spicy food and fiery entertainment and draws over 45,000 salsa lovers to the City of Oxnard for the two-day action packed celebration. Event highlights include Main Stage entertainment with Salsa and Latin Jazz bands; a large salsa tasting tent; an eclectic vendor marketplace; international foods; kids korner attractions; a salsa recipe contest and so much more. Event admission and parking are free.

With salsa tasting and spicy foods on the menu, visitors have plenty of opportunities to tantalize their taste buds.  The Festival offers everything from Mexican fare to roasted corn and tempting fresh-baked pastries.  Inside the Salsa Tasting Tent, local restaurants, Mexican markets, and gourmet salsa vendors serve a variety of salsa flavors -- fresh & fruity, hot & smoky, and sweet & spicy creating fun and interesting combinations.  Entry to the Salsa Tasting Tent is just $5 with chips included.  Beverages are also available for purchase inside the tent.

Southern California’s most exciting salsa and Latin jazz bands continue to grace the Main Stage at the annual Oxnard Salsa Festival.  The hot, Latin rhythms are known for moving the audience to their feet as they ‘strut their stuff’ on the dance floor.

Salsa dancing is a big part of the fun and experience at the Oxnard Salsa Festival.  All ages can be seen on the large dance floor embracing the sounds of Salsa.  And, as a local spin on the hit TV show Dancing with the Stars, members of the community assume starring roles as they are paired with salsa dance instructors in the “Dancing with the Community Stars” Dance Contest & Charity Fundraiser benefitting local charities.

Besides food, music and dance, the Oxnard Salsa Festival also provides some unique shopping opportunities with an eclectic blend of vendors offering an array of handmade jewelry, pottery, children’s items, imported handicrafts and more.

The Oxnard Salsa Festival was launched in 1994 by the Oxnard Downtowners to bring people downtown to celebrate Oxnard’s multicultural heritage and agricultural roots.  Over the years, the Oxnard Salsa Festival has grown in popularity as salsa dancing and salsa music gained momentum. Today, the Salsa Festival is the City of Oxnard’s largest, free community event.

6th Annual Santa to the Sea Half Marathon, Relay and 5K in Oxnard on Sunday, Dec 8th

Santa to the Sea announces that registration is now open for its December 8 half marathon and relay race. Now in its sixth year, the Santa to the Sea half marathon begins at the giant Santa located at 2801 Ventura Blvd., Oxnard and ends at Marine Emporium Landing in Channel Islands Harbor. The race starts at 8 a.m. Participants are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy (of at least a $10 value) to the starting line; all proceeds and gifts will be donated to the 10th annual toy giveaway at Santa Park on Dec. 14.

Race participants can take part in one of four races: the half marathon, the two-person relay or the 5K run and 1K kids run. The half-marathon’s fast and flat course goes through the strawberry fields in Oxnard and a new business park before heading to downtown Oxnard and the Historic District. The 5K starts and finishes at the Marine Emporium Landing. The course goes along Oxnard Beach Park to Rehab Point, where runners turn around and then head back to the finish line. The course has hydration stations with water and sports drinks approximately every two miles. And, for a second year in a row, the 1K kids fun run will be held at the Marine Emporium Landing.

Registration costs are staggered and fees increase as the race gets closer. The fees are currently the lowest they will be all year. From now until June 30, half marathon registration is $65, the two-person relay race is $130 per team and the 5K fun run is $45. All participants must register before the race; there is no race-day registration. Races will be capped at 2,300 people for the half marathon, 100 teams for the 2-person relay race, 850 people for the 5K race and 150 people for the 1K kids fun run.

All events are USA Track and Field certified and will be chip timed by Gemini. A computer chip is placed on the shoe of every runner. When the runner crosses the finish line, two electronic mats send a signal to the computer, which records the runner’s time to one-thousandth of a second.

For more information, or to register visit www.santatothesea.com, or call race organizer Mike Barber at (805) 485-7233.
