Oak Park 50th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, September 18th

Sunday, September 18th, come celebrate the Parks in Oak Park at the Oak Park 50th Anniversary. Choose from a variety of age appropriate events, some encouraging family participation.

Starting at 6:30 am pre-registered walk/run enthusiasts can participate in a 5K Run/Walk, the same course Oak Park High School Cross Country Team features for their meets at Oak Canyon Community Park.  Pre-registration required at www.rsrpd.org (Code ARW209-3).

The morning line up of activities continues with a Trail Hike beginning at 7:30 am at Oak Canyon Community Park. Guided by Trail Blazers Executive Chair Dr. Michael Kuhn and Vice Chair and Sierra Club Leader Les Wilson, and Film Historian Harry Medved; families encouraged. Admire the views as we look onto many of the parks and classic movie locations in the community throughout the way as we stop for viewing points along the hike. Created for beginning and advanced levels, all levels start together at OCCP. Both groups will walk ¾ miles together and then separate. Beginner/Intermediate 1 mile group will veer back to OCCP and 2.5 miles group will continue on and drop down onto Deerhill Street and will be shuttled back to Oak Canyon.

At 9:00 am, nature enthusiasts can join a Nature Walk at Oak Canyon led by Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority staff Andy Bleckinger and Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District staff Cyndi Richards. Staff will lead walkers through a concrete and optional dirt path as we highlight ecological benefits of trailside creeks for 7/10 of a mile.

At 10:00 am, a family Cycle Cruise through Medea Creek concrete trail will take place, starting at Oak Canyon Community Park. Sponsored by Westlake Cyclery enthusiasts Mike and Jim, riders will be guided through Medea Creek trails cruising through the creek waterway bridge and tunnel. This is a great way to experience an enjoyable and safe ride. Westlake Cyclery staff will be available for any mechanical difficulties.

Disc Golf (Frisbee Golf) will be offered from 8:00-11:00 am at Chaparral Park for those who have an interest in trying the sport. Individuals will join longtime Disc Golf player and professional player Mike Byrnes for demonstrations as individuals are offered the opportunity to play.

Our community will also be able to try out Pickleball from 8:00-11:00 am with USA Pickleball Association Nationally ranked player Doug Gale.

All activities will conclude with an Old Fashioned Family Picnic held at Oak Canyon Community Park.

There’s plenty of sunny and shady areas to spread out a picnic blanket. The fun will continue with ice cream, hot dogs, and old fashioned games. Pack a family picnic and enjoy a live DJ as we play old fashion games such as climbing on a tight rope, jumping in a bounce house, tossing water balloons, and a large board game tent. Make way for water play too in the splash pad.
